Need I say more? If you were like me then you were probably stunned into awed silence the moment the G.I. Joe trailer hit the Superbowl airwaves. (Second surprise of the night – Go Harrison and your 100 yard interception/touchdown!). I actually heard about this movie being in the works a few months ago, but it just slipped out of my mind.
For those that don’t know (and shame on you) G.I.Joe was a brand of army figurines that became action figures, then became an 80′s show. It was part of the ye’ olden Saturday morning cartoon line up…you know…when Saturday morning was worth getting up for. The G. I. Joe organization was put together to be a group of highly specialized military operatives who would spend their time combating and defeating COBRA led by (dun dun dun) Cobra Commander!
Now you can’t see a lot from the very quick trailer, but certain characters do make an appearance played by their hollywoodian counterparts. Leader of the top-secret organization is non other than General Hawk (That’s right. Hawk. Joes don’t have last names…or real names for that matter) played by Dennis Quaid. Joining him are Duke (Channing Tatum), Ripcord (Marlon Waynes), The Baroness (Sienna Miller), the Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and even special appearances by our favorite dueling ninjas Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow balancing out the forces of Good vs. Evil.
If you were anything like me then you were probably excited as hell to see the Joes on the big screen. My only concern is the lack of truly big A-List actors for this film and the qualities of certain actor to charater relations. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as C. Commander? Really? Well, I hope Dennis Quaid (Dragonheart) and Marlon Waynes (Requiem for a Dream) can pick up any of the slack. Maybe I have to come to terms with the fact that it IS G.I.Joe. It was meant to be cheesy. If you missed the promo you can see it below and remember “and knowing is half the battle”. Slated August 7, 2009.
Some famous Joe Quotes
Cobra Commander: NO! G.I. Joe was ready for us! How dare they anticipate my strategy?
Cobra Commander: I shall be waiting to reward your genius, or to have you beheaded for terminal stupidity! I have spoken.
Wet Suit: [Leatherneck is doing badly at the shooting range] Next time we’re in combat, Leatherneck, remind me to get right in front of you. That’ll be the safest place!
Snake Eyes: …………………
Cobra Commander: What are you doing? Advance! Adva…
[grenade explodes] Cobra Commander: Cobra retreat. *Retreat*!
Word on the street is that our beloved Karate Kid will be undergoing a transformation. Will Smith has decided to pick up the franchise made famous by the driving story “wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.” However, can he capture that same feel and energy? I’m a bit of a skeptic. Unsurprisingly Smith’s son Jaden Smith will be playing the part of Daniel LaRusso with Jackie Chan on board as the great Mr. Miyagi. These roles were originally filled by Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita respectively. Slated for some time in 2010.
Another good comedy that seems to dive into what it really means for us to grow within ourselves. Alright, that’s enough inner feelings to share for one day. This new addition to the “SuperBad Comedy Era” (Get it…it’s Super Bad! Like the movie…but also like the slang…you know..bad as in good not bad as in bad…you know…*sigh*you don’t get it) is based around Peter Klaven(Paul Rudd) realizing, as his wedding to lovely wife Zooey (Rashida Jones)approaches, that there is no best man. Peter’s never been the type to make friends as he’s always been with one girlfriend or another, so he begins his bro finding journey that eventually crosses paths with Sydney Fife(Jason Segal). Did I mention SNL keeper aliver Andy Samberg is making an appearance playing Rudd’s brother?
With similarities to high end movies like Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 40-Year Old Virgin, Role Models, and previously mentioned Superbad how can you NOT go see this. Not to mention actors Paul Rudd and Jason Segal are amazing. Role Models has to be one of my favorite comedies and How I Met Your Mother is a splitting image of my college experience. You can access the official site and trailer at this link. Below is a little interview with the co-stars showing the comedic synergy they’ve already been able to craft. Go and may the force of laughter be with you. Slated for March 20th, 2009!
“Go ahead. Reload. Take all the time you want. I'm still gonna kill every last one of you.”
That’s right folks. The movie I’ve been waiting for is on the way and I for one can’t wait to see it. Above is the new promo group picture and it makes me quite excited. No, not the “you make me tingle in places I never knew possible. I love you” tingle, but that ferocious feeling of anticipation and glee. For many people Wolverine has been a favorite staple in the X-Men franchise…hell in comics in general and everyone is already gearing up to go see the magic. With actors like Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) sparks can only fly. Also, finally introducing the man of the hour Gambit played by Taylor Kitsch who fans, myself included, have been waiting for since the first X-Men movie was released.
Get ready for that mayhem only a movie like this can bring. Slated for May 1st, 2009!
“Know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy”
Thankfully the inauguration happened without incident. I’m so incredibly proud to be a part of this country and can only feel joy at the fact that we have come so far. Many folks are saying that all we can do now is sit tight and wait to see what happens, but I think it’s going to take an incredible amount of work on our part as well. I will say without a doubt that this is the greatest country in the world. Regardless of the valleys, hills, and mountains that we have to climb, we will touch the sky =]
